Who We Are The Brooklyn Grandparents' Coalition The Brooklyn Grandparents' Coalition originated in 1994 and was established to provide recognition and information for Brooklyn's kinship care families. Currently the Coalition is comprised of 10 agencies that provide services and support groups to kinship care providers. These agencies represent the partnership between nonprofit, private and government agencies. The Coalition's objectives are to: increase relative caregivers knowledge about legal, health care, education, financial, and parenting issues; and outreach to Brooklyn kincare providers who are not connected with supportive services. We have an active advisory council that meets quarterly to provide the Coaltion with feedback and suggestions for future projects. The Coalition has acknowledged and paid tribute to kinship care providers to support them in their efforts to raise grandchildren through special events in Brooklyn. These events have taken place at Prospect Park, the Brooklyn Aquarium, the Brooklyn Children's Museum, Lundy's, Brooklyn Hospital and Maimonides Hall. Up to 200 kinship providers and children from diverse ethnicities and cultural backgrounds attended each event. The Coalition's events have received press coverage from People magazine, the Associated Press, the NY Daily News, NY State Kinship Connection, and various local newspapers. New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, and the former Brooklyn Borough President, Howard Golden, have commended the efforts of the Coalition. Our services include: * A quarterly newsletter specific to kinship care family issues. * Four psycholeducational workshops per year to provide information and increase networking among caregivers regarding parenting, stress, bereavement, legal, health care and financial issues; * A recognition luncheon for relative caregivers to honor and celebrate all they do for their grandchildren. * Special Events and Holiday Parties.
