Social Security Benefits

Grandparents and grandchildren may also be eligible for benefits form the Social Security Administration. Grandparents may be eligible for retirement benefits, disability benefits or survivor’s benefits if they or their spouses worked long enough to be covered by Social Security. Grandparents may also be eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) if they are blind or disabled and have low incomes or if they are elderly, 65 years if age or older, and have low incomes.

Grandchildren may be eligible for Survivor’s benefits if onen of their parents has died, worked and paid social security taxes or they may be eligible for disability benefits if one of their parents is receiving disability benefits. Grandchildren may also be eligible for Social Security Retirement or survivor’s benefits, based on their grandparents’ earning record, if they have lived with and been supported by their grandparents and if their parents are dead or disabled. Grandchildren who are disabled may be eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) if they are blind or disabled and have low income and resources. Grandparents can apply for Social Security Administration Office. Legal custody or guardianship is not required to apply for Social Security benefits for grandchildren. If denied, grandparents can appeal the denial to the Social Security Administration.
